FortonMG - Acrylic Resin
FortonMG - High strength casting resin
The FortonMG system is an acrylic, non-toxic casting resin consisting of FGR 95 Gypsum Plaster and VF812 Acrylic Resin. This material produces a high strength lightweight cast, ideal for small as well as large casting projects, ornamentation, and decorative arts.
No hazardous materials are used in the manufacturing process and no hazardous waste products are generated. Washes up in water. FortonMG can be used to solid cast, slush cast or hand lay up in any silicone mold. FortonMG demolds in 1 hour (or sooner if accelerant is used).
Can be used as a casting material, as well as for making rigid cases for silicone and latex molds.
Picture is of casts taken of 4 Cabbage Trees and shown located next to their originals. Each FortonMG cast is approx 2 metres high and 400-600mm around. Like Ghosts in the landscape. Read more....
Versatility
FortonMG is the first technology to make alpha hemi-hydrate gypsum an exterior product. Independent testing, which included accelerated aging to 30 years, has supported exterior durability. FMG is a unique combination of high-strength alpha hemi-hydrate gypsum with water based polymer chemistry that is reinforced with 'E' glass fibres. It is a non-toxic, ultra strong, very hard, weatherproof and odourless material casting system. The casting methods are essentially the same as that used for casting in urethane or polyester resin and fiberglass. FMG can be slush cast (hollow), hand laid-up, sprayed through the proper equipment or poured for solid casts. FMG is an easier product to work with than resins, making casting less time consuming to complete. Repairs are also easier to make when using FMG compared to a casting made of polyester resin or epoxy.
An additional advantage is that, unlike polyester and epoxy resins, FMG can be cast directly into an alginate mold to produce a casting with extraordinarily fine detail. From a health and safety standpoint FMG , being water wash-up, is considerably less hazardous than resins and FMG has a Class 1 fire rating according to ASTM-84.
Architectural modelling / Architectural casting
FortonMG can be used for architectural and landscape art projects with the addition of two additives. A dry Melamine resin is added to provide additional moisture resistance, and Forton Hardener (Ammonium Chloride) is added to ensure proper cross-linking of the VF812 and the dry Melamine resin. These are added dry to the FortonMG base prior to measuring and mixing the material.
Production casting
An accelerant is also available to speedup the setting of FortonMG to achieve increased production of pieces from fewer molds. Care should be taken when using this additive to ensure sufficient time is allowed for processing the material.
FortonMG casting tips
A wide variety of colours and finishes can be incorporated into the FMG face mix. UV stable liquid or dry powder pigments can be added to FMG to provide a vast range of colours.
Aggregates can be added to the face mix to achieve desired texture effects when sandblasted and sealed. Metal powders can also be added to the face mix to achieve various cold cast metal effects. After demolding, the cold cast metal can be patinated or polished to achieve a desired finish in a fraction of the time and cost normally associated with foundry cast metal.
White in colour, FortonMG can be coloured with a variety of pigments and oxides.

Various other effects can be obtained by the addition of Metal Powders or Metal Paints. See our Surface Effects section and our Techniques section.A 50/50 mix of MCB Iron and Bronze coatings was applied to the candle holder. Only Tiffany Green patina was used. The Tiffany Green reacted more with the iron and it turned rusty, leaving the bronze to go verdigris.
